
India is the 4th largest producer of iron ore, producing around 74 million tonnes annually, which is nearly 7.5% of the global output. The countries proven iron ore reserves stands at around 3 billion tonnes, 2% of the world total.
India's largest iron ore deposits are located in Bihar-Orissa belt, which accounts for 44% of the total reserves, followed by Karnataka-Goa (32%) and Madhya Pradesh – Maharashtra (16%).
Concomitant to this, India has emerged as the 9th largest crude steel producer, producing more than 3% (24 million tonnes) of global steel output.
Overall, Japan and China are the largest importers of iron ore from India. Out of total exports of 13.90 million tones of iron ore to China from India, 8.75 million tones or about 62.95% constituted high-grade ore (fines).. Also the availability of mine headstocks of iron ore at the end of 2001 was around 2.3 million tones (as per Ministry of Mines), which represent surplus after dispatches for domestic consumption and exports. High-grade fines occur mainly in the Jharkhand-Orissa and Bellary -Hospet regions
IRON ORE IN ORISSA ( INDIA)
IRON :- The Iron ore deposits of the state of Orissa occur in 5 distinct geographic zones,namely -
a) BONAI-KEONJHAR
b) GANDHAMARDHAN
c) TOMKA-DAITARI
d) GORUMAHISANI-BADAMPAHAR
e) HIRAPUR
The parent rocks of the Iron deposits are Banded Iron Formation (BIF) & more precisely the Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ) or Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) & Ferruginous shales. The Iron bands are also represented by magnetite, martite, goethite, maghetite although in Orissa.
The eastern limb features Thakurani, Joda East, Joribahal, Jiling- Longalata, Jajang & Malangtole deposits. The western limb features Kiriburu, Bolani, Kalta, Barsua & Khadadhar group of deposits. Gandhamardhan & Tomka-Daitari lie in widely separated towards south-east, the intervening areas occupied by Metabasic lavas, Granaites & Clastic Quartzite. Gorumahisani-Badampahar deposits are associates with Banded Hematite/ Magnetite Grunerite & BHJ
WHY IRON ORE FROM ORISSA ?
- Orissa offers different grades with iron content in the 62-67 per cent range
- the voyage time from Paradip Port to most of the Asian ports is 12-15 days against 40-45 days from Brazil and, therefore, there is considerable freight advantage and
- the eastern sector mines with their good quality ores are ideally placed for export thrust.
